Who May Apply

  • International students seeking to pursue undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral studies at Japanese universities
  • Non-Japanese citizens and not of Japanese origin
  • Applicants under 45 years old with good physical and mental health
  • Students intending to enroll in degree programs (non-degree, research, and exchange students are not eligible)
  • Applicants with basic Japanese language comprehension (around JLPT N4 level; not strictly required)
  • Approximately 15 slots available per year

Benefits

Scholars may enjoy the following benefits:

  • Monthly allowance of ¥100,000 for undergraduate students
  • Monthly allowance of ¥140,000 for master’s students
  • Monthly allowance of ¥140,000 for doctoral students
  • Airfare grant of up to ¥250,000
  • Scholarship duration of 2 years for both undergraduate and graduate scholars

Qualifications

Applicants must have the following qualifications:

  • Must be an international student, not a Japanese resident and not of Japanese descent
  • Must be applying to a Japanese university or graduate school with a study duration of at least 2 years
  • Must possess good physical and mental health
  • Must have basic Japanese comprehension (preferably JLPT N4 level)
  • Must be under 45 years of age
  • Must not be receiving any other scholarship
  • Must first obtain admission to a Japanese university before applying
  • Must submit complete documentary requirements, including research plan and recommendation letters
