Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral and Experienced Researchers

Who may apply

  • International postdoctoral and experienced researchers from all countries except Germany and Brazil.
  • Scholars of any nationality and discipline seeking to conduct independent research at a German research institution.
  • Applicants with above-average academic qualifications and a strong publication record.
  • Researchers from developing or emerging countries working on sustainable development may also apply under the Georg Forster Research Fellowship, which follows equivalent guidelines.

Benefits

Scholars may enjoy the following benefits:

  • Monthly fellowship of €2,700 for postdoctoral researchers and €3,200 for experienced researchers.
  • Duration of 6–24 months for postdocs and 6–18 months for experienced researchers (can be divided into up to three stays within three years).

Qualifications

Applicants must have the following qualifications:

  • Must have completed a doctorate (PhD) or equivalent academic degree.
    • Postdocs: PhD completed within the last 4 years or within 6 months of completion (with summary).
    • Experienced Researchers: PhD completed within the last 12 years, or up to 16 years after a master’s if a PhD is uncommon in the applicant’s field.
  • Must have published in internationally reviewed academic journals or publishing houses.
  • Must present a detailed research outline (up to 5 pages) and obtain a host’s statement from a German research institution confirming availability of research facilities.
  • Must submit at least two expert reviews (to be uploaded by the reviewers directly).
  • Must have adequate English or German language proficiency for the proposed project.
  • Must comply with the Foundation’s standards of scientific ethics and good research practice.
    • Required documents include:
    • Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages)
    • Complete and selected list of publications (as per sample format)
    • Doctoral certificate or equivalent proof
    • German or English language certificate (if required)
    • Research proposal and supporting host documents
